What people ask

What is the Colourful Street in Stavanger?

The Colourful Street, Fargegata or Fargegaten in Norwegian, is Øvre Holmegate in central Stavanger. Its houses were painted in strong colours in 2005, and it is now one of the most photographed streets in the city.

Where is it?

In the city centre, five minutes on foot from the market square Torget and about fifteen minutes from the cruise terminal.

Who came up with the idea?

Hairdresser Tom Kjørsvik wanted to bring the quiet street to life, and the colour plan was made by Craig Flannagan. The street became a pedestrian street in autumn 2005.

When is the best time for photos?

Early in the morning, before cafés and bars open. In the evening there is more life and fewer clear shots.

Are there bars in the Colourful Street?

Yes, several, with outdoor seating in the warmer months. C'est la vie is at Øvre Holmegate 27, with cocktails, a terrace under a red awning, quiz, DJs and karaoke.
